Jump to a place, postcode or street in Cornwall
Hints and tips for searching
Zooming in and out and panning around
When you first open this website, you are presented with a map of Cornwall.

Generally, you will be interested in a specific area, rather than the whole county. There are three ways to jump straight to an area - by the name of a place, by a postcode or by a street name.
In the top right-hand corner of the mapping website window you will see the search boxes.

The first one is a drop-down list of the available searches. Pick the one you are interested in - Place, Postcode or Street.
Type in a Place, Postcode or Street name in the second box, and either click the Go button, or press the return/enter key on your keyboard.
The results of your search will display at the bottom of the window. The display will show you how many records matched your search, and then list them in alphabetical order.

Use the scroll bar to find the correct location and click on it with your mouse. The map display will zoom in and centre on this location.

If your search returns no results then the message 'Nothing matches YOUR SEARCH' will appear in the area at the bottom of the window.
First check that the drop-down box shows the right category for the search you want - if the drop-down box shows place and you enter a postcode the mapping system will not match any results.
If you are searching for a postcode, you must enter the full postcode e.g. TR1 3AY. It doesn't matter if you enter it in capital letters or lower case, and it also doesn't matter if you enter a space between the two parts or not.
If you are searching for a place or a street, the mapping system will search for any entries in the database that contain the words you have entered. So if you're not certain if the street you are looking for is called, for example, Sea View Lane, Sea View Terrace or Sea View Road, just enter the words 'Sea View' in the search box and all these different roads will be found.
Also, many Cornish names can be written in more than one way. If you are having trouble finding a place, try entering a part of the name. For example, if you enter Praze an Beeble as a place to search for, the mapping system will find no matches. If you just enter the word Praze, several records will be returned, including Praze-an-Beeble.
In both the place and street searches, any 'saint' names are represented as St with no full stop, E.g. St Erth.
Again with the place and street searches, it doesn't matter if you enter your search in capital letters, lower case or a mixture of the two.

To zoom in on the centre of the current map, click the Zoom In button - the leftmost button on the toolbar. The map will show more detail of a smaller area.

Likewise, to zoom out around the centre of the current map, click the Zoom Out button on the toolbar.

As you zoom in and out you will notice that the background maps change. These maps are provided by the Ordnance Survey. The mapping system is designed to display the most detailed map it can for the area you are viewing.
To slide or pan the map, click one of the eight arrow buttons around the edges of the map. The map will move so that more is visible in that direction. The scale of the map will stay the same.

To get back to where you started with an overview of the whole of Cornwall, click the Cornwall button.

If you have a mouse with a wheel you can use it to zoom in and out on the map. You can also click it to centre the map at that point.
