Click on the folder icon to expand it and access the layers inside it.

To switch on a layer, click in the check box to the left of the layer name. The map display will redraw, and display the layer you selected. You can switch on as many layers as you wish - just bear in mind that the more layers the map is displaying, the more complicated the map is to read.
Click on the open folder icon to close it. Any layers that are switched on will remain on even when the folder is closed.
Once you have expanded a folder you will see some layers may be displayed in grey, and some in black.

The layers in grey are not visible at the current map scale and you cannot switch them on or off. As you zoom in to more detailed maps, these layers will become visible and then you will be able to turn them on or off.
If you switch a layer on and then zoom out to a map scale where it is no longer visible, when you zoom in again, the layer will still be switched on.
